Police Chief Reports Overall Crime Rise, Reduction in Homicides and Shootings

On the Village’s website, Police Chief Tim Curry reported a 2.5 percent overall increase in crime in 2012, but a “more significant reduction in shootings and homicides from the previous year.” According to the Chief, the number of shootings went down by 20 percent, while total homicides decreased by 46 percent. The Chief touted the Maywood Alternative Policing Strategies (MAPS) program in fostering “strong bonds and positive relationships” between residents and officers. The report didn’t indicate whether there is any correlation between the MAPS program and the marked reduction in reported gun activity and fatal crime. We’ll be looking forward to speaking with Chief Curry about the possibility.
