We received the following tip in an email:
“The Citizens Utility Board has received numerous reports of a growing scam in Illinois. Consumers say that scammers posing as ComEd employees have called or knocked on their doors, informing them that they must purchase a prepaid credit card ranging from $200 to $900 to avoid a service shut off.” The CUB advises individuals to follow these tips:
- Don’t give out financial or account information. Utility employees will never ask you for this.
- Ask for ID. Find out exactly who you’re speaking with.
- Call your utility. The company can verify if an employee has called or been dispatched to your home.
Please spread the word about this scam! “Share” CUB’s warning on Facebook.
