Governor Quinn Asks President to Declare Cook, Ten Other Counties, Disaster Areas

Governor Pat Quinn has asked the Obama administration to declare eleven counties in the state, including Cook, major disaster areas. The Governor’s request is a necessary formality in the emergency response process. Until the President issues his declaration, federal assistance won’t get out to affected residents. Moreover, the longer the President takes to declare, the longer residents will have to wait to apply to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for relief. Newly -elected congresswoman, Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D, IL-8), and Senators Dick Durbin (D) and Mark Kirk (R) all signed a letter urging the President to grant the Governor’s request:
