(Chicago) – The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Tau Gamma Omega chapter, will host “HIV /AIDS and STD AWARENESS FORUM,” Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon at Loretto Hospital, 645 South Central Avenue. This event is open to the public.
In 2010, the fourth largest number of all new HIV infections among all people in the United States occurred among black/African American women with heterosexual contact (5,300 infections). Of the total number of new HIV infections among women in the United States in 2010, 64% occurred in blacks/African Americans, 18% were in whites, and 15% were in Hispanics/Latinas.
“HIV/AIDS is a worldwide issue with a significant impact on African-American women, especially in the Austin Community. This program is an extension of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national health initiative which is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles,” said Kimberly R. Morton, Tau Gamma Omega chapter president.
We will conduct a survey questionnaire to assess knowledge of attendees about myths and facts of HIV/AIDS. Those who wish to be tested will be included in a gift card raffle. Free condoms for male and females will be available. Panelists include: William Anderson of Hartland Association; Alexian Brothers Health System, Mama Brenda Matthews from Tap Roots will perform a spoken word.
The discussion will provide Austin community women residents education and resources about HIV/AIDS & STD awareness, prevention, testing and counseling onsite. We will also discuss nutrition associated with living a healthy lifestyle and changing behavior to reduce risk. Our partner Loretto hospital will also conduct general health screenings.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international service organization. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women. Tau Gamma Omega chapter provides services to communities located on the west side of Chicago and the near west suburbs of Cook County. VFP
