SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Chris Welch, D-Hillside, released the following statement after he voted in support of legislation to legalize gay marriage in Illinois:
“This landmark legislation will help us to put an end to discrimination against the LGBTQ community in our state, and will give everyone the right to marry the person that they love. This vote puts our state on the right side of history, and I hope that it will send a message to other states, that we can no longer reserve liberties for only a few. Additionally, by making our laws more inclusive, we are making Illinois a more attractive to prospective residents and businesses.
“I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to make life-changing health decisions for their life-partners, have access to automatic inheritance and that the children with same-sex parents should not have to question why their parents cannot marry, while others can.
“I am especially proud that this legislation can make this major stride toward equality for all, while protecting the consciences of religious leaders.
“There is a lot of work to be done in Illinois, but this legislation is a major accomplishment, not only for our LGBTQ friends and loved ones, but for our entire state.”
