Position Description and Board Expectations:
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the West Cook YMCA is hired by and reports directly to the Board of Directors. It is essential that the next CEO be an engaging person who aligns resources and efforts that address the needs of the service area. The person is accountable and responsible for creating the organization’s long term strategy objectives with board involvement. The person must have strong fiscal management experience, strategic planning and leadership skills. The skills to take initiative, motivate, delegate and lead others successfully are also necessary components. Organization goals will be met by ensuring that ambitious membership development, operational and financial plans, funding, community outreach and partnerships, as well as advocacy, are implemented in order to create the highest impact program outcomes. By convening important community leaders, partners, funders, public, faith based, governmental and other nonprofits, the CEO will extend the organization’s reach and continually highlight the leadership role of the Y. This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished visionary with a distinguished track record in operational excellence, team leadership and fund development to play a critical role in community impact.

Key Deliverables and requirements for the CEO include, but are not limited to:
• Lead and Develop a Staff Team:
Evaluate the current strengths and weaknesses of all key staff and create a plan for individual staff development, including key changes in organizational structure and key roles as needed.  Create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development.  Lead by example and remain actively engaged in staff development and performance, which will lead to superior results in programming, member and community engagement.

• Provide Strong Fiscal Leadership/Lead Fund Raising Efforts:
Manage the finances to ensure a balanced budget at year end paired with revenue growth and expense management to support the current day-to-day operations as well as the continued development of reserves for the future needs of the YMCA. Experience preferred in management and development of endowment funds, foundation grants, special events, community collaborations and creative revenue streams necessary to support and sustain the needs of the YMCA.

• Create a Culture of Excellence/Act as an Ambassador for the Mission:
Create a culture of excellence within the YMCA and act as an ambassador for the mission and vision for the YMCA within the community.  Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, and staff and volunteers.  Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, proactively creating collaborations while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA and the YMCA’s heritage.

• Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan:
Develop a plan of action to address any specific areas that are in need of enrichment or development including, but not limited to, setting priorities, enhancing the operation, increasing marketing and awareness, and the improvement of programs and services. Work with the board and the appropriate YMCA staff to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the keen ability to quickly address any issues that may arise as well as forecast future needs.

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
1. Accredited 4-year college degree.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and have personal values that are consistent with the YMCA mission.
3. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with the YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
4. The ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
5. The ability to oversee the development of new programs and to review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement with the communities in which we serve.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
1. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (or obtain within 3 years of employment).
2. Fiscally sound business management approach.
3. Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
4. A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $1M or more annually.
5. A track record of inspiring and developing volunteers boards.

Salary Range and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $95,000 – $125,000, annualized. Benefits include a defined contribution plan with 12% total salary contributed by the association and the employee.

The West Cook YMCA, rooted in Judeo-Christian tradition, is dedicated to developing the spirit, mind, and body of all persons through quality leadership, programs and services, in cooperation with community groups for the common good. The YMCA began taking shape in 1903, with dedication to spirit, mind and body that has never wavered. In 2013, the West Cook YMCA celebrated 110 years of service to youth and families in Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park and several other surrounding areas.

The West Cook Y Resident Program offers affordable rooms for men. By providing affordable housing at the Y, men are able to have better access to the tools necessary to begin living a healthier lifestyle.  Each resident is granted a full Y membership with access to the Wellness Center for physical health and well-being, as well as multiple free fitness classes and pool access. The Community Learning Center provides the opportunity for resume building, job search capabilities and volunteer opportunities, providing a sense of community leading to self-esteem and confidence.

The reported operating budget is $3.9M. There are currently 31 full time employees, 119 part-time employees with a large volunteer workforce.
The West Cook YMCA is located in Oak Park, IL. Oak Park is a village adjacent to the west side of the city of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States.  It is the 29th largest municipality in Illinois with a report population of 51, 878 with easy access to downtown Chicago via public transportation. This diverse community features an excellent school system and access to quality health care services. Oak Park is but one of the communities in the service area, which also includes: Bellwood, Elmwood Park, Forest Park, Franklin Park, Maywood, Melrose Park, River Grove, River Forest and Stone Park.  All of these factors contribute to a wonderful quality of life and frame a wonderful setting for raising a family.
