The following release was issued by the office of Sen. Lightford (D-4th):
Senator Lightford’s Saturday University began its Fall Term October 12 and ended December 14, 2013.
The partnership with Senator Lightford and Black Star Project continued to provide the Saturday University students with an outstanding comprehensive learning system.
The learning system is designed to improve the students’ performance in math reading and writing. The University students were 5th through 8th graders that met every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 10 weeks.
Each week, teachers worked diligently with the students to boost their confidence and skill sets in their areas of weakness. Students in the program expressed that they felt better about themselves and their ability to understand and complete school work.
On the last Saturday of the term, a graduation celebration and ceremony was held. The celebration began with pizza, snacks, beverages and games. Following the celebration, the students participated in a graduation ceremony. During the ceremony students were issued outstanding achievement certificates and awards (gift cards) for their additional accomplishments during the semester.
Moving forward, Senator Lightford and Black Star Project are preparing for the 2014 Spring term. They are excited to partner again, with the joint effort to improve the quality of life for students through aiding them in their educational paths. Registration has begun and slots are filing rapidly. They welcome former students, as well as new students to enrol in this free program. VFP
