The Maywood Rotary Club, which originated out of the Oak Park Rotary back in 1924, will be celebrating it’s 90th year of selfless service tomorrow at Tom’s Steak House on the northwest corner of 19th and North Avenue, Melrose Park, IL. The event is from noon until 2pm.
Rotary International was founded by attorney Paul P. Harris (pictured left), on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois. From its founding, the social service organizations has grown to include 1.2 million members worldwide. According to its website, Rotary began as “a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.”
The Maywood Rotary has long had a reputation as the Village’s premier civic organization, which maintains social service projects like its annual holiday coat drive, book give-a-way and scholarship program year-round.
Some notable Rotarians include Warren G. Harding, former President of the United States; the world-champion boxer Manny Pacquaio; U.S. Senator Richard Lugar; Astronaut Frank Borman; German novelist and Nobel Prize Laureate Thomas Mann; and Dr. Charles H. Mayo, co-founder of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. VFP
