The District 89 Board of Education will host three informational meetings for the public to address the reorganization under consideration. Sessions will consist of a presentation on the middle school locations, benefits, and rationale behind the decision. The concept of the dual language magnet school that was approved on January 9th will also be explained. Potential boundary changes, recommendations for the repurposing of schools, and other relevant concerns will be addressed in the presentation along with other questions that can be answered from those submitted in advance.
These are informational sessions to ensure that members of the public have accurate data concerning the Board discussions. No public comment will be allowed as this is not a Board meeting. Questions may be submitted in advance to the Superintendent’s office or may be submitted that evening at the location prior to the presentation. Questions will only be accepted in writing and will not be taken during the presentation. There will be no public comment at these meetings.
Presentations will be loaded on the district web site following the informational meetings.
As many of our community members and families are aware, District 89 is undergoing a reorganization of our services and schools. We welcome your feedback on any of the decisions. Please review the PowerPoint presentation that was shared with all staff on February 25th by clicking here. This presentation will help you understand the process that we are undergoing and give you a sense of items that have already been decided by the Board of Education. We realize that it is not comprehensive, but it will provide an overview which may suffice for many and provide you with details of decisions that have been made. If you would like further details or simply like to comment, feel free to email the Superintendent.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the District Reorganization.
Dual Language Magnet School
On January 9, 2014, the Board of Education voted to open a dual language magnet school beginning in the 2014-15 school year. This is a magnet school that will be open to all of District 89’s students. This is NOT a school that is designed to serve only our bilingual population. Half of the students will be native Spanish speakers and the other half will be native English speakers. Outside of the usual academic pursuits, all students who leave the school in 5th grade will be bilingual and bi-literate in both English and Spanish. More detailed information can be found in the dual language report to the Board and the summary documentthat followed.
