Maywood, 9 AM to 11 AM— Maywood Youth Mentoring will be hosting its FREE monthly youth breakfast at Canaan AME Church (801 S. 14th Avenue, Maywood IL). Please enter through the rear parking lot door. This month’s speaker will be Joseph Pullen, a basketball player turned software developer. He’ll be speaking on the theme: “Prepare for your future, but what if?” This event is open to youth of all ages, parents, mentors, chaperones and the general public.
Elmhurst, 12 PM to 4 PM — Operation Uplift Center and its WestTown Museum of Cultural History in Maywood invites you to THINK SPRING and join with them for the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Awards Luncheon, on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Diplomat West Banquet Hall (681 West North Avenue, Elmhurst). The event entitled “Embracing The Legacy of His Dream”, will memorialize the greatness of Dr. King’s life, and the ultimate tragedy of his assassination, on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. The keynote speaker is Reverend Michael Wright, a homegrown recipient of the Dream Weaver Award. The afternoon will also highlight other present-day success stories whose achievements embrace the principles of Dr. King’s journey. Among those being presented are Dr. Dorothy L. Bounds, Founder/president of the Dorolyn Academy of Music, Oak Park; Michael Romain, Editor & Chief of the Village Free Press. The Rosa Parks Heritage Awardees are: Mrs. Anne Street-Edmund; Mrs.Tenner Ferguson; Mr & Mrs. Angus Laird; Deacon Wash Westley, who at age 111 holds one of the oldest active Illinois Drivers Licenses; and Reverend Curtis Malone, Pastor of the First Christian Church, Maywood.
