Stritch School of Medicine Cuneo Center, 2160 S. First Avenue, Maywood, IL, 8 AM to 1 PM, COMCAST CARES DAY! Loyola’s Comfort Care Project offers comfort and support to seriously and critically ill patients and their families. Homemade blankets are given to each patient or family member of the patient when they are in ICU. This project will include measuring, cutting material, and tying knots to make the blankets. Sewing will not be involved. We intend to make as many blankets as we can.

Garfield Elementary School, 1514 S. 9th Avenue, Maywood, IL, 9 AM to 1 PM, COMCAST CARES DAY! The purpose of this project is to positively impact the youth of School District 89, proudly serving the Maywood, Melrose Park, and Broadview communities. The mission of School District 89 is to ensure the well-being of their students academically, emotionally, and socially, and to provide an environment that will prepare students to pursue college or career opportunities through meaningful learning experiences. This project will serve as a school beautification project to improve the inside and outside appearance of the school. The inside beautification will include touch up paint, painting murals, and character education words. The outside beautification will include planting flowers in the front of the school. This project will improve the learning environment and in turn student achievement.

Maywood Ceasefire Building, 1100 S. 11th Avenue, Maywood, IL, 9 AM to 12 PM, SPRING PRAIRIE PATH CLEANUP! The annual Illinois Prairie Path cleanup will begin at the 1100 Building at 9 AM. Volunteers are needed! Our goal each year is to clean up as much of the 62 miles of the Illinois Prairie Path as possible. Hopefully, we will continue to duplicate the same effective and extraordinary clean up that is done each year for Earth Day. We would like you to help us by rolling up your sleeves (but wear work gloves), and pick up litter along the trail. Please dress according to weather conditions, and join us on Saturday, April 26th. If you, your family, co-workers and club organizations are interested in helping out, please contact one of the team coordinators listed below for more details and locations. West Cook YMCAWest Cook YMCA, 255 S Marion St, Oak Park, IL, United States and Boys and Girls Club of West Cook County, 4000 St. Paul Ave., Bellwood, IL, 10 AM to 12 PM, HEALTHY KIDS DAY! The West Cook YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day takes place at the West Cook YMCA (255 S. Marion St. in Oak Park) from 10:00am – 12:00pmand also at the Boys and Girls Club of West Cook County (4000 St. Paul Ave in Bellwood) and features fun, active play and educational activities, such as archery, drumming and dance demonstrations, and healthy cooking activities. In order to promote healthy lifestyles, the West Cook YMCA will also be running a membership special from April 26 – May 4, featuring $0 Joiner’s Fees for Youth Memberships and $60 off any other Joiner’s Fees. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day is supported by the Memorial Park District, and also supported by national media partners Sprout and Lazy Town, who are committed to encouraging kids to lead a healthy lifestyle. Village of Melrose Park Gymnasium, 1000 N. 25th Ave., Melrose Park, IL, 12 PM to 4 PM, A FREE HEALTH FAIR! In celebration of The Day of the Child, an event established by the United Nations in 1954 to recognize children globally, the Proviso Township Mental Health Commission (PTMHC) has teamed with the Village of Melrose Park and Presence Health to hold a free health fair for families, open to the public, on April 26, 2014. Free screenings for glucose, cholesterol, vision, blood pressure and hearing will be available. Free services including dental cleanings, haircuts and developmental evaluations for children up to age three will be offered. A professional therapist will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about mental health. “While the health fair is focused on children and families, it is really for anyone in the community,” said Proviso Township Mental Health Commissioner and Melrose Park Trustee Arturo J. Mota. “We’re always working toward a healthier community.” There will be entertainment for children, including a clown, a raffle, piñatas and prizes. Healthy, delicious refreshments will be served. Mota expressed appreciation to Westlake Hospital, Family Focus Nuestra Familia, Frank Karkazis, DDS, PAEC and the Veterans Park District for their participation in this event.
