On Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 10 AM, the John C. Vaughns Scholarship Fund will hold its 47th Annual Sweetheart Cotillion. The event, which is always held on the Saturday prior to Mother’s Day, will be at the O’Hare Westin Hotel, 6100 North River Road in Rosemont, Illinois. Each year, high school junior and senior girls from around the Chicagoland area are selected to be debutantes. This event raises funds for scholarships that are awarded to college-bound students in financial need.
The John C. Vaughns Scholarship Fund (JCVSF) is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit comprised of volunteers. Based in Maywood, it is one of the oldest grassroots organizations in Proviso Township. Since 1965, JCVSF has provided well over a million dollars in scholarship money to students in need.

This year’s debutantes are as follows:
Nedra Martice Yore
Nedra is the daughter of Krystal Yore-Evans and Chad Evans of Westchester, IL and Marcus & Lawanda Graham of Greensboro, NC. She is the granddaughter of Pastel Yore, Rose Yore and Emma Graham.
Nedra attends Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park, where she is a member of the PMSA Gospel Choir, Student Council and PMSA Newspaper. She’s also a member of the Proviso East cheerleading team, PLCCA’s Hook a Kid on Golf and the National Society of Black Engineers. In 2012, Nedra won First Place in the Proviso Idol Talent Search.
Nedra is a member of The Second Baptist Church in Maywood, where the pastor is Rev. Wallace W. Sykes. She also seeks spiritual inspiration from Rev. James E. Marshall and the Refreshing Spring Baptist Church.
Upon graduation, Nedra plans to attend Chicago State University and major in Biology. Her aspiration is to become a dentist. Her escort for the afternoon will be Juwuan Johnson. Nedra will be presented by her godfather, Mr. Amiel Eskridge
Janice Batrice Newman
Janice Batrice Newman is the daughter of Thomas and Veda Newman. She’s the granddaughter of the late J.B. and Angerline Newman; Kenneth and Bobbie Lacey; and the late Roy Edward Hardy. She attends church at Christian Life Center where Rev. Jerry McQuay is the senior pastor.
Janice is a junior at Mother McAuley High School and enjoys studying French. Last year, she was given an award of Academic Excellence in French for maintaining a “B” average. Among her many extracurricular activities are: Color Guard ( a performance troupe that uses flags to accompany the marching band), Primary Colors (an art club), and Anime Club (a social club that promotes Japanese film and culture). She has also studied acting at Second City in Chicago.
In college, she plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in French and Education. She aspires to be a French Teacher. She will be presented by her father, Thomas Newman.
Daliyah Imani Peppers
Daliyah is the daughter of Aaron & Shawn Peppers of Maywood and the granddaughter of Wendell and Janice Peppers and Bennie and Carolyn Webb.
Daliyah is a senior at St. Joseph High School in Westchester, where she maintains a 3.5 GPA; is an honor and advanced placement student; a member of the National Honor Society; and an All-Conference volleyball player; member of the softball team; an editor of the yearbook club; and president of Future Business Leaders of America. An avid participant in various community activities, she also volunteers with the Maywood Youth Mentoring Program and Hephzibah House for Children.
Daliyah is a member of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood, where the pastor is Rev. Marvin Wiley. Upon graduation, Daliyah will attend Illinois State University and double major in Marketing and Marketing Management. She plans to obtain a job with a Fortune 500 Company. Her escort for the afternoon will be Zachary Harvey. Daliyah will be presented by her father, Mr. Aaron Peppers and will dedicate the day to her great-grandfather, the late Frank Peppers, and her great-grandmother, the late Ruth Jean Marshall.
Vonshae Latia Ferguson
Vonshae is the daughter of Dale and Paula Ferguson of Forest Park, IL and the granddaughter of Donald and Lucille Bishop. Vonshae is a senior at the Proviso Math & Science Academy where she maintains a 3.2 GPA. She is a member of the Proviso East Cheerleading Team and the Proviso Math & Science Choir.
Vonshae is a member of Chicago Church of Christ (Rev. Darrien Gauthier), where is active in the praise step team and Kids Kingdom. Upon graduation, Vonshae plans to attend Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and major in Physical Therapy. Vonshae says that on behalf of her loved ones, she will remain dedicated, focused, and motivated every step of the way while in college. Her escort for the afternoon will be Alaa J. Collins. Vonshae will be presented by her father, Mr. Dale Ferguson.
Angela Jessica Harris
Angela is the daughter of Nolan and Michelle Harris of Bolingbrook, IL and the sister to five siblings. Angela is a junior at Bolingbrook High School in Bolingbrook, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Angela is a Washington, D.C., native and during her freshman and sophomore years she attended Benjamin Banneker Academic High School. The school ranks #2 among the Top 10 high schools in Washington, D.C.
Angela enjoys using her gifts and talents to give back to the community. She volunteered to teach dance classes for two years at her elementary school and she helped them coordinate a fundraising dance recital. Angela also enjoys writing poetry and has been an active writer since 2011. She has been chosen to recite a number of poems in front of her class and the whole school. Additionally, she serves as a tutor for Bolingbrook High School and a mentor to her peers and youth at both the school and her church, Grace Apostolic Faith in Chicago, where District Elder Maurice F. Southern is the pastor.
Angela aspires to be an architect. In college, she plans to double major in Architecture and Interior Design, as well as minor in Fashion Design. Her escort for the afternoon will be Tyler Taylor. Angela will be presented by her father, Mr. Nolan Harris. She will dedicate the day to her grandmother, Donna Harris. VFP
