According to a statement released by District 209, classes will be cancelled at Proviso East High School on Monday and Tuesday due to a fire that occurred at the school last night. Class schedules at Proviso West and Proviso Math and Science Academy are unaffected.
Last night, at around 9 PM, more than 100 firefighters from area departments responded to a fire at the school that may have started on the second floor in a social room. According to Maywood Police Chief Craig Bronaugh, the blaze was discovered by security guards who were on duty. A stage play involving 20-30 people was going on at the time. All participants were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
Proviso East Principal Tony Valente said that the fire damaged about ten rooms in the building where it occurred. School officials are planning to relocate all office and classroom activities in the affected area.
The Cook County Fire Inspector is currently investigating the cause of the fire and will update the District on the details in the near future. VFP
