Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Youth on the Move to Collaborate in Summer Youth Initiative

A common complaint among Maywood residents is that youth often seek negative forms of recreation and camaraderie due to a lack of positive activities in the Village.

With this observation in mind, the Office of the Mayor of Maywood has teamed with Youth on the Move and other nonprofit organizations and businesses to create the Safe Summer Youth Initiative.

Throughout the summer of 2014, various nonprofit organizations and businesses will be offering targeted recreational and community-building activities for young people of all ages. Through partnerships with local businesses and franchises such as Subway and McDonald’s, youth will have the opportunity to engage in various events, projects and employment all summer long.

Some of the many offerings that will be available to youth include free pool days, book clubs, open mic nights, community gardens, movie nights, basketball tournaments and field trips.

There will be a press conference announcing this major initiative at 2:00 pm  on Saturday, May 17, in front of the Maywood Police Department, 125 S. 5th Avenue, Maywood, IL 60153. VFP
