The following issued by the office of State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch:
Westchester, Ill. – State Representative Emanuel “Chris” Welch and Governor Pat Quinn announced today that four governmental entities in the 7th Representative District have been awarded Illinois Youth Recreation Corps grants, grants that will allow youth ages 14-18 to be employed for 60 days during the months of June, July and August.
The Illinois Youth Recreation Corps was established for making grants to local governments and not for profit entities to provide wages to youth operating and instructing in recreational and conservation programs. Such programs provide natural resource conservation management skills and recreational opportunities.
The Village of Bellwood, Memorial Park District (which serves Bellwood and parts of Hillside), the Village of Maywood, and the Maywood Park District were each awarded grants for summer youth employment this year. “I am really pleased to make this announcement today,” Rep. Welch said on Tuesday. “These jobs will keep our kids safe and off the streets while at the same time teaching them valuable work/life skills.”
The Illinois Youth Recreation Corps 2014 grants are administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Grant applications were due in April 2014. The Village of Bellwood will receive $76,248. Memorial Park District will receive $80,640. The Village of Maywood will receive $489,600, and the Maywood Park District will receive $96,288. Grant awards were based on the amounts requested by each entity.
