MAYWOOD–During a June 11, 2014, Legal, License and Ordinance Committee (LLOC) meeting, Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh presented military veteran Darius Wade with a Citizen’s Award for an act that could’ve been his last.
On Monday, May 12th, at approximately 10:30 PM, Maywood resident Darius Wade, of the 1400 block of South 14th Avenue, rushed to the rescue of a 22-year-old male who had been shot multiple times.
“As a result of his injuries, [the victim] was both lying down on the ground and experiencing heavy bleeding,” according to the public statement Bronaugh read at the meeting.
“After realizing what happened, [Wade] responded three houses from the safety of [his] residence to this scene. Through [his] Courage, immediate action, using [his] personal medical supplies and military training, [Wade] initiated bleeding control before the arrival of first responders.”
According to the statement, the scene was “still considered to be an active shooting scene” when Wade responded. Police and EMT technicians who responded on the scene consider Wade’s early actions a “significant factor in the survival of this gunshot victim.”
“On behalf of the Village of Maywood Fire Department I would like to personally and sincerely thank you for your service not only to the community, but also to our country. God Bless you and your family,” said Bronaugh. VFP
