Milestones: Maywood, Bellwood Chambers Honor Local Leaders | Porter Honored by County Board

The Maywood and Bellwood Chambers of Commerce held their annual Awards & Scholarship Banquet on June 8 at Triton College.

The two chambers honored community and business leaders from both villages, in addition to presenting scholarships to several college-bound students during the event that attracted a crowd of hundreds.

Among honorees who received recognition included Urban Partnership Bank; Dr. Daisy Harmon-Allen of the Chicago Chapter National Black Nurses Association; the Maywood Rotary Club; T & JJ’s Supreme Steaks & Catering; and Debra Vines of the Answer, Inc.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White was the event’s keynote speaker.

Bishop Dr. Claude Porter honored at Cook County Board of Commissioners meeting

Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, the founder of Maywood-based Proviso Leyden Council for Community Action, was recognized by the Cook County Board of Commissioners for his career and contributions at its June 8 board meeting, according to Frank Shuftan, County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s communications director.

Porter founded PLCCA in 1968 as a private nonprofit designed to serve low-income residents in Proviso and Leyden Townships. Since then, the organization has grown to include more than 30 programs and services more than 30,000 families each year, according to the organization’s website. VFP
