Former Proviso Township High Schools District 209 superintendent  Nettie Collins-Hart, (pictured left), who resigned from that position in June, is now working as superintendent of the Hazelwood School District, located in north St. Louis County, Missouri.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Hart is the first black woman to permanently head the Missouri school district, the majority of whose 17,800 students are African American.

“I cannot express how elated I am as the new superintendent of Hazelwood,” said Collins-Hart, who gave a statement during a press conference Monday via phone. She said she felt the energy of the community during a visit last month, and wants to be a part of that and moving the district forward.

Collins-Hart, 61, was named to her new position in April and started last month. She’s the fourth person to head the district in six years, the Post-Dispatch notes.

“The School Board’s vote selecting Collins-Hart was unanimous,” the paper adds. “Hazelwood officials would not immediately release her contract, which includes her salary and benefits. In response to a public records request, a spokeswoman said the district would do so within 72 hours, as required by law. The previous superintendent in Hazelwood made about $230,000.”

Collins was selected out of a pool of three finalists for the top job, according to the Post-Dispatch. VFP

  1. I wish Dr. Collins-Hart all the best. Let’s hope that she can be accountable for the students in St. Louis, and not make the same mistakes she did for the students at the Proviso Township in District #209.
