This week has more back-to-school events, numerous community meetings, a book fair and two high school football home openers for area residents to enjoy. There’s something for all ages and interests around town this week, not to mention even more stuff to look forward to in the weeks ahead. Browse below for details:

Back-to-School Fun Event || 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. || MAYWOOD 

On Aug. 26, at 300 Oak St., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Nate Comic Inc. will host a Back-to-School Fun Event. Come out and enjoy an afternoon of free food, music, a big game truck and more. Proviso West Football Home Opener || 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. || HILLSIDE 

Come out and see the Proviso West Panthers football team kick off their non-conference season against Lincoln Way-West, from New Lenox. The game will take place on Aug. 26 and starts at 7:30 p.m. at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St, Hillside.

Afriware Books 23rd Anniversary Book Fair || 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. || MAYWOOD

Afriware Books, the brainchild of former electrical engineer Nzingha Nommo, is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year with a 3-day sale starting Aug. 25 and a massive book fair on Aug. 27. Come browse the store’s huge selection of titles, which will be on sale for $1, $3 and $5.

The sale will be followed by a natural hair care seminar from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. A $5 donation is recommended.

After the Panthers play, Pirates fans will get to delight in their team’s home opener against Main West, Des Plaines. The game will take place on Aug. 27 and starts at 1:30 p.m. at Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave., Maywood.

Drive-by for Peace Community Program || 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. || MAYWOOD

Mothers of Murdered Sons will host a Drive-by for Peace Community Support program on Aug. 27, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event will take place at 9th and Madison St. This event is open to the community and residents are encouraged to bring information about their own community initiatives and programs.

Jeanette Taylor, president of Mollison Elementary school council will speak about strategies to help effectively improve the standards of the students in District 88. Maywood Eisenhower Expressway Town Hall Meeting #2 || 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. || MAYWOOD

The Illinois Department of Transportation is close to deciding on permanent changes to the the Eisenhower Expressway ahead of a massive renovation project. Come out and tell the experts what’s on your mind.

Broadview MB Church 5K Walk/Run and Health Fair Saturday, Sept. 17 || 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. || BROADVIEW 

The Broadview Missionary Baptist Church (BMBC) is hosting a 5K Walk/Run and Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., as part of our annual Family Week event.

The 2016 Family Week theme is, Now is the Time to Prosper: Encouraging Spiritual and Physical Family Health. Scripture reference comes from 3 John 1:1-2, “Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest proper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

The 5k walk/run will take place in the village of Broadview and the Health Fair will be held in the Fellowship Hall of BMBC located at 2100 S. 25th Ave. Our goal is to provide participants with information about local services that support healthy living, good nutrition, and exercise.

We would also like to include information about opportunities for families to serve God through missions and outreach. Hospitals, YMCAs, local retailers, insurance providers, nutritionists, healthcare and sports and fitness professionals, are ALL WELCOME!

We invite you and your company/organization to participate in this important neighborhood event.
