Big Events Around Town, Sept. 9 – 16 (And Beyond)

This week, sports tops our list of things to do in Maywood and beyond. The Pirates and Panthers both feature fresh coaches and both are trying to rebound from home opener losses. They both have something to prove.  The Pirates play Leyden in Franklin Park while the Panthers will face Lyons at home. Their next games, which both fall on Friday, Sept. 9, should be intense and fun to watch.

But consider them prelude to the excited Sunday football to come — not the televised NFL games, but the very accessible (and very affordable) competition hosted by the Maywood Bucs this Sunday. They’ll play teams from Bolingbrook and Aurora.

The monthly breakfast meetings hosted by the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network, one of the most prominent clergy organizations in the area, will resume after a brief hiatus. They’ll be passing out awards to students who worked in their summer employment program, among other activities.

Financial planning expert Herman Brunson will be at the Maywood library to discuss the importance of having a financial plan.

Nate Comic Inc. has developed a partnership with the nonprofit assistance organization SAVERS and will be hosting a donation drive. Bring by your household items.

All donations are tax-exempt and those who donate will be provided with a tax receipt on-site. With the donations, Nate Comic will be able to raise funds to put on event like its Aug. 26 back-to-school drive, which the organization’s founder, Nathan Lee, said was a huge success. More than 100 boxes of school supplies were handed out, Lee noted.

The Fred Hampton Memorial Legal Assistance Scholarship Fund will host its annual scholarship award ceremony on Saturday. Two law school students will receive money that will help them continue their legal studies.

This year, the Maywood Bataan Day Organization’s annual memorial service — scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, at Maywood Veterans Park — has multiple layers of significance.

“On the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the Maywood Bataan Day Annual Memorial Service,” noted the organization’s president, Col. Richard A. McMahon, Jr., “the 70th Anniversary of the Memorial Tank Dedication and the 15th Anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, it is important to confirm our sacred vow to remember the heroes of the United States.”

Maywood Family Fest || Friday, Sept. 16 to Sept. 18 || Veteran’s Memorial Park || Fred Hampton Way

Maywood Fest is coming back this summer after a several year  hiatus. Village officials announced that the fest will be held from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18 at Veterans Park, located between 1st and 5th Avenues along Fred Hampton Way (Oak St.), during the following times:

  • Friday | 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday | 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Sunday | 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Book Discussion with Gabriel Lara || Saturday, Sept. 17 || 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. || Maywood Public Library || 121 S. 5th Ave. || MAYWOOD

Gabriel Lara, the executive director of Maywood’s Quinn Community Center, will lead a discussion on the novel “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea. The novel is set in Mexico and the United States and beautifully details the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl named Nayeli, who comes to the United States seeking a better life.

The book discussion is part of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read program, which offers funding so that local libraries can launch community-wide discussions on issues of national urgency … like immigration. The Maywood Public Library is sharing an NEA grant with several other area libraries, including Oak Park Public Library and Forest Park Public Library.

Broadview MB Church 5K Walk/Run and Health Fair || Saturday, Sept. 17 || 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. || Broadview Baptist Church || 2100 S 25th Ave || BROADVIEW 

The Broadview Missionary Baptist Church (BMBC) is hosting a 5K Walk/Run and Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., as part of our annual Family Week event.

The 2016 Family Week theme is, Now is the Time to Prosper: Encouraging Spiritual and Physical Family Health. Scripture reference comes from 3 John 1:1-2, “Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest proper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

The 5k walk/run will take place in the village of Broadview and the Health Fair will be held in the Fellowship Hall of BMBC located at 2100 S. 25th Ave. Our goal is to provide participants with information about local services that support healthy living, good nutrition, and exercise.

We would also like to include information about opportunities for families to serve God through missions and outreach. Hospitals, YMCAs, local retailers, insurance providers, nutritionists, healthcare and sports and fitness professionals, are ALL WELCOME!
