When it was founded 135 years ago, the Maywood Police Department didn’t have many people to fill its ranks.
According to Douglas Deuchler, author of Maywood, one of numerous books on local towns in his “Images of America” series, the police were called “constables” back then. And in 1898, Deuchler notes, there were only three of them to fill the town’s entire force.
That’s changed, obviously. According to current Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley, the department has a lot more to boast about nowadays — starting with the hiring of eight new officers.
Talley said the first four will be hired as a result of a $500,000 federal grant from the Department of Justice his department received in October. He said the other four officers will be hired to replace officers planning to retire.
He said he hopes to have them on the job sometime in 2017. The department has 54 officers and the new officers will maintain the department’s current staffing, but Talley looks at the new officers coming in as a resource to do good things in the village.
“They want to get out and do what they’ve learned in the academy,” Talley said of the new officers, adding that their enthusiasm is always welcomed.
“We can get more done and it allows us to strategize,” he said.
Talley said that, with the new hires, the department will be able to focus on the basics, like traffic enforcement, more patrolling, citing people wearing saggy pants and related violations that residents feel are important.
He said these things show residents that the department hears them and that the police is showing their presence in the community.
Talley said the new hires will also give the more experienced officers the opportunity to go after bigger criminal elements in the village like gangs and drugs.
Although heroin addiction and related overdoses are on the rise, Talley is thankful it hasn’t impacted the village, but his department is prepared.
The department recently received 108 doses of Narcan, free of charge, with the help of Cook County. Narcan is a drug used to revive people who have overdosed on heroin, and Maywood officers will soon be trained on how to properly administer the drug.
Addressing broader goals, Talley said that making the police department among the elite in the nation is his biggest goal and he’s close to making it happen, he noted.
In April the department received initial accreditation with Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Talley said becoming a member of CALEA also benefits the village as a whole.
“It attracts economic development because it allows businesses to look at us as an accredited law enforcement agency,” he said. “It will spawn economic development in the area.”
Becoming a part of CALEA is not easy and that what makes being a part of it makes it special, the chief added.
“There are only 20 percent of law enforcement agencies internationally that are members,” he said. “The bar is set that high.”
In order to become a member of CALEA, a police department has to go through several on-site assessments prior to a decision being made.
The assessments involve addresses safety issues inside the department, training and hosting training sessions for other departments are some of the things the department will have to accomplish to become a member of CALEA.
Talley said he hopes the department will pass all the assessments and become a member by 2019.
“We’re establishing ourselves as a leader in training and we’re seeking out everything we can do to be a professional agency,” he said.
