One person was fatally wounded after a shooting that happened at 12th Ave. and Warren in Maywood on Saturday, Police said. It was previously reported that the shooting took place at Conner/Heise Park on the corner of 10th Ave and Washington Blvd.

According to Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley, the shooting happened at around 5 p.m. It had been reported earlier that the shooting took place between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Both police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that the victim is Andrew Burnside. An official cause of death, however, has yet to be determined, authorities said. An autopsy was scheduled to take place today.

Burnside, who attended Proviso East High School, is the son of Maywood Park District Board President Arnettra Burnside, Talley said.

“This is a tragedy,” the chief said. “His mother was an upstanding citizen of this community. This is our second homicide in January and, just like our first one, we’re going to make sure all of our resources are dedicated to resolving this matter.”

Talley said that detectives are still collecting witness statements and sifting through evidence.

“We have sketched witness statements that say there were six black males with hoods in the park,” Talley said. “We’re still sketching the details out and trying to see if there was some dialogue between [Burnside] and the assailants that may have led to something.”

Talley said that police didn’t have Burnside listed as a member of any gang. Several officers are working overtime on the case and Cook County evidence technicians were called to process the crime scene, he said.

On Sunday, some local elected officials expressed their sympathy for Burnside, who Park District Commissioner Bill Hampton called “one of our faithful and dedicated community workers.”

“I’ve met her son and he was always polite and uplifting,” Hampton said. “I hope justice is served. We need to stop this nonsense in our community.”

“She has my sympathy and condolescences,” said Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins of Burnside. “We’re working on making Maywood safe again. This is just unbelievable, because things have gotten better. If we can do anything to help her, all she has to do is let the village know.”

  1. I hope and pray that they capture the perpetrator that assassinated this young man. This should not have happen. The village of Maywood needs to come together and stand “we are going to turn you in, if you do something wrong.”

  2. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Burnside family in the terrible loss of their son Andrew. A senseless crime, a senseless loss of life — no parent should have to bury their child that has been murdered although many mothers and fathers have had to do so. Such a multi-faceted problem in communities – no words.

  3. So sorry for this young man to lose his life for a nonsense crime as condolences goes out to the family

  4. My condolences to this family.
However, I want to address the quote of Mayor Perkins “if there is anything you can do” There’s plenty you can do. For starters, you can make the “police patrol” get off their lazy a**es and actually PATROL this community! Our tax dollars are paying their salaries while our children are being gunned down in the streets that we pay them to patrol! CITIZENS OF MAYWOOD, ITS CLEARLY TIME FOR A CHANGE! Let’s get these lazy incompetent ppl out of office and vote someone in with fresh new ideas.
