209 Together to Host Community Meeting on May 17

The community group 209 Together will host a community meeting on Wednesday, May 17 to discuss recent education-related changes that have happened in the local public schools in Proviso Township.

“In the past three years some incredible change has happened and there is amazing opportunity at our fingertips as a district,” noted Connie Brown, owner of Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor in Forest Park and a lead organizer for the group.

Proviso Together, a political extension of 209 Together, now has a 7-person majority on the District 209 school board. Brown was the manager of the two successful campaigns that were won in 2015 and 2017 by Proviso Together candidates.

“There is a new transformational superintendent, an inspirational new principal at Proviso East and they are in the process of identifying an equally as engaging principal for Proviso West,” Brown added. “New curriculum is underway, better training, safer schools — so much to boast about.”

Brown said that the meeting will work to incorporate local residents into the deliberative process.

“Nothing will move forward if the community doesn’t stay involved. Ten towns came together to enact this change,” she stated.

“Ten towns came together to demand better high schools. But part of the reason we find ourselves in this very situation is because the communities stopped paying attention, stopped getting involved — here is our chance to not let that happen again.”

The meeting will take place Wednesday, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the Broadview Public Library, 2226 16th Ave. in Broadview. VFP

  1. Thank you for the announcement! I hope to see everyone there! This community event is put on by the community organization 209 Together which is focused on community development in an effort to improve our schools (scholarships, mentoring, tutoring, community service, etc.) versus the political organization Proviso Together.
