Bernice Hurley, a longtime Bellwood resident who lived in Aurora, passed away on Aug. 8 after a long illness, according to family members. She was 70.

Hurley was born on Scott on Feb. 2, 1947, to Emma Boston and John Byas. As a child, she attended Shady Grove Baptist Church in Greenville and received Jesus Christ at an early age.

She was a graduate of Greenville High School, Class of 1965. Career choices brought her to the Chicagoland area in 1966, where she was received into the membership of the Church of Saint Bride Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago along with her husband, Joseph Hurley. The couple settled in Chicago and later in Bellwood, Illinois, where they attended Saint Simeon’s Catholic Church, raised two sons, a number of beloved German Shepherds and enjoyed many laughs.

Bernice’s professionally career spanned 30 successful years with International Harvester, which later became Navistar International, where she excelled as a global accounts manager. She fulfilled her dreams of entrepreneurship and owned and operated two businesses during her retirement in Eudora, Arkansas.

Anyone who had the pleasure to meet Bernice, or “Bunny” as she was called by friends and family, will remember her courageous spirit, compassionate generosity, helpful nature and fun loving friendship. She lived her life without compromise and fiercely guarded her independence even in failing health. Family, friends and acquaintances will miss her greatly.

She was preceded in death by both parents; a brother, Johnny Lard; and her husband of 39 years, Joseph Hurley.

Bernice leaves to honor her memory: two sons, Gordon “Keith” Hurley, of Aurora, Illinois; Norman (Persia) Hurley, of Durham, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Jasmyn Hurley and Julian Hurley, both of Durham, North Carolina, and the littlest grandchild, John Hurley, of Springfield, Illinois; along with a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Memorial and visitation services for Hurley will be on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 11 a.m., at James Funeral Home, 204 Hill St. in Aurora.  VFP
