A prominent Maywood family has lost another member. Frances “Dee Dee” Hampton, the sister of civil rights icon and former Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, and Maywood park district commissioner Bill Hampton, died suddenly on Aug. 23, according to Bill, who confirmed his sister’s death over the phone on Thursday. She was 69.
Bill said that Frances was admitted to Loyola University Medical Center two days ago. She had been suffering from a kidney infection, he said, adding that Frances had recently moved into his Maywood home. Their mother, Iberia Hampton, died last year at 95.
During the Thursday interview, Bill said that his sister had been involved with the Fred Hampton Memorial Legal Assistance Scholarship Fund, an annual award that given to law students.
On a Facebook post announcing her death, Bill wrote of Frances, “Words cannot begin to express the sisterly love and support she has always given me, my family and friends over the many years. Thank you DeeDee for being my sister.”
Frances was the only sister of Bill and Fred, and the only daughter of Francis Allen and Iberia Hampton.
Bill said that funeral plans for his sister are forthcoming. VFP
