Proviso West High School in Hillside will host its first homecoming parade in roughly a decade on Saturday, Sept. 23, school officials and student body leaders recently announced.

Calvin Davis, the school’s assistant principal for athletics and activities, said that the high school stopped hosting the parade around “eight or nine years ago.”

“Administrators made the decision to have homecoming at night, which was when the game also took place,” Davis said during an interview on Tuesday.

“Along with that night game, they had other festivities, like fireworks. Now, we’ve decided that the school would go back to having the game in the afternoon, preceded by a parade.”

Davis said that the parade will feature the high school’s numerous community clubs, as well as representatives from police, fire and park districts in surrounding suburbs. He said that, as with Proviso East’s homecoming parade, Proviso West’s homecoming will include representatives from all three District 209 high schools.

“We hope that the Proviso East band will be in the parade,” he said. “There will also be a number of PMSA students involved since they’re members of clubs and sports here.”

Davis lauded the various feeder communities — including Hillside, Berkeley, Bellwood, Stone Park, Melrose Park, Maywood and Westchester — for lending their support to the parade. He said that the high school will obtain a permit for the parade from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“Everything is in good order,” he said. “I think it’s a great thing for the communities and hopefully it will be very nice. We really appreciate the support of all of the surrounding communities.”

The parade will kick off at Stevenson Park, 3105 Washington Blvd. in Bellwood, 10 a.m., and wind its way west along Washington Blvd. to Butterfield Rd. before turning on Wolf Rd. in the direction of the high school. VFP

  1. This is awesome! Kudos to the student council and the people at Proviso West High School for finally having a Homecoming Parade. This is a stepping stone for Proviso West, and other communities in the feeder to support our children, that will becoming future leaders. Thank you The Village Free Press for sharing this!

  2. I am, as I know others are, pleased to see the tradition of the Homecoming Day Parade resume. The last time that Proviso West hosted the parade was Homecoming 2010. It was great for the school and for the community to celebrate Homecoming together. Good luck, Panthers

    1. A W: Wow! Since 2010 that Proviso West never had a Homecoming parade?! That is absolutely insane. Well, I am glad that it will happen this Saturday, and unite the feeding communities to support Proviso West and have current/alumni coming together.
