Three students who attend Garfield Elementary School, 1514 S. 9th in Maywood, were sent to the hospital on Sept. 20 after ingesting what school officials are calling an “unknown substance.”

According to a statement sent to parents and guardians by Garfield’s principal, Marsha Alexander, the students got the substance from another student.

“As soon as we learned about the incident we contacted medical professionals and the students were taken to the hospital and checked out as a precaution,” Alexander said in the statement.

She added that, “as of this communication these students appear to be fine,” and that, since school officials contacted local law enforcement, the incident has been under investigation.

According to a Sept. 20 WGN 9 report, a relative of one of the hospitalized students said that the “children unwittingly consumed what they believed to have been cocaine.”

Relatives told the news outlet that another student at Garfield “allegedly bullied others close to the lunch hour trying to force the kids to ingest what the boy described as cocaine.

“A grandmother of one of the students said the bully sprinkled cocaine into her grandchild’s lunch without him knowing. When he came back from eating his lunch, he complained about stomach pain. Ambulances were called.”

School and law enforcement officials have not confirmed the identity of the substance. Read Alexander’s full statement below:
