Mothers of Murdered Sons (MOMS), a local support group for grieving parents who have lost children to violence, is planning a vigil for slain 14-year-old Michael Israel Jones, who was fatally shot multiple times on Aug. 30 while walking in Maywood.

The vigil will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, 3 p.m., at the corner of 10th Ave. and Washington Blvd. in Maywood (the area where Jones was murdered).

Phyllis Duncan, the founder of MOMS, had held a vigil a few days after Jones was killed. She said earlier this month the vent was sparsely attended and wanted to organize another one. Duncan has also been canvassing Maywood, seeking information into Jones’ death.

No we have not forgotten, and yes we do care,” Duncan wrote on a Facebook post announcing next weekend’s vigil.

“Join us as we give a community response to the family, friends and community that Michael’s life did matter,” Duncan wrote. “Bring a purple balloon and a prayer.”

  1. Major props to Ms. Phyllis Duncan for doing this for Jones’ family in this difficult time. I pray that the Maywood Police Department find the perpetrator that did this horrendous incident to Jones. I also hope that the residents of Maywood can cooperate with the police department and stop the code of silence of “don’t snitch.”

  2. I hope you get some answers for this young man. This tragedy was unbelievable. The youth is dying an we not receiving any answers, the police department don’t keep in contact with us and provide us with no answers. Moms hearts are hurting, an the police give us no other choice but to talk to the people on the streets to find out what happen to our babies. I BEEN FOLLOWING THE VILLAGE PRESS AND NOTICED OVER 12 DEATHS THIS YEAR, BUT ONLY ONES IS SOLVE IS THE ACCIDENT DEATHS. We need to question this Chief about the solve murders since, he been in charge. I watch other people facebook page, an they say correct things about no accountability for the murders. We need answers…be there or be square.

    1. MOMA LOVE: I have been typing the “comment section” in “The Village Free Press” that residents need to hold the Maywood Police Chief Talley accountable. The residents of Maywood need to attend the town hall meetings and do a “citizens comment” and voice their concern about the violence epidemic that is happening in Maywood. There should be no excuses why it is a “cultural norm” and nothing can’t be done.
