Janet Buenrostro, the 14-year-old who last week became the first Proviso East High School tennis player to qualify for the IHSA state tennis tournament in over 35 years, was defeated in the tourney’s first round on Oct. 19.

Buenrostro lost 6-4, 6-1 to Sophie Davis of Providence Catholic in New Lenox. Buenrostro, however, showed resilience in the first round consolation bracket, soundly defeating Kayla McSweeney of Richards in Oak Lawn 6-0, 6-1, before losing in the second round consolation bracket to Marta Krakowski of Elgin High School in Elgin 6-0, 6-2.

Proviso East volunteer assistant coach Mel Phillips said that Buenrostro, a freshman at Proviso Math and Science Academy, “played well, fought hard and never gave up.”

“We’re all very proud,” said Phillips, who qualified for the state tourney as a Proviso East tennis player back in 1978.

  1. Congratulations Janet for representing Proviso East High School in the Illinois State tournament! You made this high school prop and we hope that you can get stronger and better next year to compete again in the state tournament. #PiratePride

  2. It’s hard to walk on new grounds, but she did it. Best wishes to her and all the people that helped her along the way. Give it another shot, and remember that win or lose you make us proud. Much love to all.
