Nearly 30K Homeowners To Get Automatic Property Tax Refunds

The Cook County Treasurer’s Office announced on Dec. 31 that it will send nearly 30,000 homeowners who overpaid their taxes refunds totaling $8.3 million — without requiring them to fill out an application.

“We’ve taken steps in the past to make the refund application process easier,” said Treasurer Maria Pappas. “Now we’re trying to eliminate the application altogether.”

Pappas and her office called the refunds a “late Christmas present for homeowners.”

Pappas said that homeowners overpay their taxes “for a variety of reasons, including the simple mistake of paying more than is owed on the tax bill. More often, overpayments result from a reduction in property taxes after the bill was paid. ”

Among the 29,752 refunds the treasurer’s office expects to send out, roughly 9,000 will go to homeowners who paid their taxes through a bank or mortgage escrow account.

Nearly 21,000 people who paid by check or online will automatically get refunds to their bank or credit card accounts, treasurer’s officials said.

Pappas’ office laid out the following steps for those interested in seeing if they’re entitled to a refund:

  • Visit
  • Select the purple box ‘Your Property Overview’
  • Enter your address or Property Index Number (PIN)

“The refunds are due to tax overpayments made since 2013,” county treasurer’s officials said. ” Using bank, credit card and property records, the Office has electronically determined who made the overpayment in these cases, making refund applications unnecessary.” VFP
