A Bellwood man died on Sunday after his vehicle collided with a truck on I-294, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Maurice Raymel Chears, 20, of the 400 block of 23rd Ave., was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m. on Jan. 13, the medical examiner’s report noted.

According to the autopsy results, Chears died from multiple injuries from a “motor vehicle collision” with a “stationary truck.”

Officials with the Illinois State Police could not be reached for comment on Sunday afternoon.

A report by 23 WIFR noted that the crash happened “near Western Springs” and that investigators said that an “an Illinois Tollway snow plow was stopped in a lane at mile marker 29.3 with emergency lights on while they were helping with traffic control for a previous crash.”

According to the 23 WIFR report, Marzale Hughes, 21, “was driving a Chevrolet with two other passengers inside when he lost control and hit the back of the snow plow.”

Chears was a passenger in the back of the vehicle and was “pronounced dead at the scene.” The front-seat passenger “was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Neither Hughes nor the driver of the snow plow were injured, WIFR reports. VFP
