An essay contest sponsored by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will reward the winner with a $3,500 scholarship, which would go to support the winner’s first year of college.

The first annual 2019 Black History Month Essay Contest “recognizes a senior in high school who writes an impactful 500 – 1000 word essay on a topic related to Black History Month,” Preckwinkles office explained. “The essay should answer the question, ‘Who or what inspires you in honor of Black History Month?'”

The deadline to apply for the essay contest is Feb. 14. The following are the qualifications:

  • Must submit high school transcript
  • Must be a graduating high school senior (class of 2019)
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year institution of higher learning in the fall of 2019
  • No minimum GPA requirement
