Maywood village officials gathered at Coin Laundry, 715 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, on Feb. 7 to cut the ribbon on the village’s newest business.

The laundromat’s owner, Denny Vo, 52, said that the business is his second laundromat. He also has one in Bellwood. Vo added that he’s currently planning to open two more locations — his third, in Glendale Heights, is currently in development while he has plans to open a fourth in Villa Park.

“I welcomed the opportunity to come in and invest here,” Vo said, adding that he currently opens the entire mini-mall that the laundromat is located in.

“This is an awesome idea that shows that Maywood is on the move,” said Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins. “We now have three laundromats here in Maywood. We appreciate that he wants to come in and establish business. The town is big enough to have all three laundromats.”

Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet, Jr. said that the new laundromat is a welcome prelude to the 68-unit, mixed-use apartment building that is developers are planning to construct right across the street from the laundromat, at 800-820 S. 5th Ave.

Last year, Interfaith Housing Development Corporation requested that the project timeline be pushed back. Construction on the building is now scheduled to start in March 2019 and completed by May 2020.

“This is another addition to our commercial base,” Norfleet said. “This used to be a vacated area and now it’s coming back to life again. So, it’s becoming more and more valuable for small businesses to operate in the village.”

During the ribbon-cutting, Vo and Teresa Garza — who manages the Maywood laundromat, as well as the one in Bellwood — were greeted by the owners of T&JJ’s, Joe and Theresa Wilson. The couple, whose business is just across the street, came bearing their popular chicken and sandwiches.

Garza, who lives in Maywood, said that the new laundromat offers Wi-Fi and free drying for customers who wash. VFP
