The owner of a trucking company that is looking to build a new facility in Maywood said that he recently closed on the property and could break ground by spring.

James Apa, the owner of SMC Management, a trucking logistics company, said that he finalized the purchase of a vacant, village-owned lot at 1001 S. St. Charles Rd. in Maywood for $250,000. The Maywood Board of Trustees had agreed to the purchase last August.

The parcel of land, which has been vacant for decades, is the last undeveloped part of the old American Can Company site.

Now with the sale final, Apa said, he’s looking forward to completing civil engineering drawings and going out to bid for the construction of a concrete pre-cast building.

Last year, Apa said that the 6,500- to 7,500-square foot facility will house offices and a service garage, “with a tractor and trailer wash bay, along with an on-site diesel fuel business,” according to the redevelopment agreement.

The rest of the site will be used as a secure trucking area featuring a fully paved yard large enough to park 100 semi-trailers and trailers.

Apa said last year that many of the trucks will haul recycled and excavated materials, and waste products, to and from construction sites, among other areas.

Apa explained during an interview on Feb. 13 that he’s still waiting to finalize some paperwork with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District regarding the water shed, but once those are approved, the “building will be set to arrive by late June, early July.”

Apa said that he’s hoping to have the facility completed by no later than Christmas.

Last year, Apa said that he anticipates hiring around 50 employees, including mechanics, office clerks and more than 40 truckers. He said that he prefers to hire locally.

“I’m probably going to start hiring for drivers and office staff first,” he said recently. “Then we’ll hire mechanics and more drivers. I should be looking to hire in the fourth quarter. It’s all timing. We have to first make sure that the water shed is taken care of.”

Apa said that he anticipates that construction fencing and a trailer will be installed within the next 40 days.

“We’re going to start construction as fast as we get our permits,” he said. “I think the village will have a groundbreaking in the spring.”
