A Maywood gas station is currently serving out a six-month suspension of its business license related to selling illegal tobacco products.

Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins said on Feb. 14 that, despite the boarded up gas pumps, the business is not permanently closed.

Earlier this year, Falcoln Fuel, 201 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Maywood, was issued a temporary revocation of its license to sell tobacco. In addition, the business agreed to a 6-month suspension of its business license, village officials said.

Falcon Fuel also likely owes the village fines related to illegally selling tobacco products, but on Thursday afternoon village officials couldn’t immediately provide the total that the business owes.

The temporary closure is the culmination of years of legal troubles for the gas station and convenience mart.

In November 2016, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted unanimously to direct village staff to take steps to revoke Falcon’s business license after village officials reportedly discovered that the business was selling cigarettes purchased in Missouri that didn’t contain county or state sales stamps, which is a violation of village ordinances.

Prior to that board action, Falcon had been cited twice for selling small plastic baggies that are commonly used to store narcotics, village officials said at the time.

The revocation or suspension process involves a hearing before the mayor, who makes the final decision on revoking or suspending business licenses in Maywood.

So far, it isn’t known whether or not Falcon incurred additional violations after the board took action in 2016. VFP
