My name is Arnettra Barber-Burnside and I want to formally announce my candidacy for trustee for the village of Maywood.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother and a resident of Maywood for twenty-one years. I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Certification for Paralegal Studies from DePaul University.
Currently, I serve on the Board of Commissioners for Maywood’s Park District. We have experienced some successes during my tenure with a number of projects including, complete renovation to 809 Madison Street – a state of the art facility, which had been previously closed for three decades. We secured funding and made infrastructure improvements to our facility located at 921 S. 9th Ave. and we on the move for continuous improvements for the benefit of Maywood Illinois.
I earn my living working for the Illinois Department of Human Services and I serve on the Executive Board for AFSMCE (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) Council 31 Local 2854. It is the largest trade union of public employees in the United States.
The Board of Trustee for the village of Maywood’s primary role is to act as legislature for the village. The trustees develops, approves ordinances and resolutions for Maywood. They approve funding and expenditures for the village. Additionally, the board provides direction to the village manager. For each of these activities, I have years of experience doing these types of tasks and possess the academic background to understand what should occur and the impact of my vote on the various concerns.
I am running for Trustee for the Village of Maywood because I believe that:
- An economic strategy is needed for Maywood, where we seek other opportunities for revenue and not just look to tax our residents.
- In order for Maywood to move forward and be that “Village of Eternal Light,” we must have a safe community. Nearly two years ago, I lost my youngest and only son to gun violence while he was walking along Maywood streets. The police believe he was not the intended target. But his killer has not been brought to justice. I do not want another family to have to go through the pain and anguish that my family has had to endure. We must find holistic approaches to end gun violence and keep our children, our entire community, safe.
- Being a Food Desert and having Water challenges are just a few issues that plague Maywood residents. Each is important and deserves answers. Maywood is in a prime location to engage businesses to come and remain. We must understand the environmental issues regarding the water and have proper customer service for our constituents billing.
While I have worked with various personalities to achieve success in the past, I know I can use those same skills to unite the village Board of Trustees to work together for the betterment of Maywood. These are challenging times, but with a united government, active citizens that want better for their community and a Candidate for Trustee with experience and education to make a difference, we can develop solutions for change.
I, Arnettra Barber-Burnside, ask for your vote, for Trustee for the Village of Maywood, because I am sincere, strategic and solution-driven.
