Community members have been mobilizing after two suicides happened in Maywood less than a week apart. And this weekend, the nonprofit Best of Proviso Township, along with area young people and other local organizations, is planning one of the biggest shows of support yet.
On Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, community members will be going door-to-door throughout Proviso Township to check in with residents. They’ll meet at the Maywood Police Department, 125 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, at 2:30 p.m., on both days.
“Our communities have suffered some devastating loss of lives over the years,” according to the statement issued to the initiative’s Facebook event page. “Within the past six months three brilliant students of Proviso East decided that their daily lives were so unbearable that they preferred not to stay here with us. We also loss a young adult who took his own life. We are also losing young lives to violence.”
The initiative’s organizers added that the door-to-door well being campaign “is to ensure that our residents and students know that we are here and love them despite any struggles we go through.”
The organizers are inviting “all residents, youth organizations, churches, groups, elected officials, etc. to walk with us and hand out vital information about mental health and any other resources that our families need and can benefit from.”
