The Maywood Board of Trustees is looking to increase regulations for property owners in the village who utilize their homes for short-term, vacation rentals through companies like Airbnb and Homeaway.
The move comes months after a fatal shooting that took place at a house party inside of a Maywood home that Maywood police said was used as an Airbnb.
During a regular meeting on July 9, the village board voted unanimously to direct Michael Marrs, an attorney with the village’s law firm Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins, to draft an ordinance that would impose an additional set of regulations for anyone looking to turn residential properties they own into short-term rentals.
Currently, the village has no ordinances specifically related to short-term, vacation rentals. Under the proposed ordinance that Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins is drafting, the village would require property owners looking to rent their residences out to apply for a business license with the village, which would subject them to village inspections, among other things.
“It’s not going to stop the bad actors, but it does give you the ability to say, ‘Yes, we’ve approved you doing this and if you don’t do it according to our rules we’re going to say you can’t,’ and then, when we see them still advertising on one of these services we can go to them and give them additional citations,” Marrs said. “[We tell them], ‘You’re not licensed to do that here’ and shut down the activity to the best of our ability.”
Marrs said that the ordinance regulating short-term rentals like Airbnb would be different than those regulating landlord rental units.
Maywood Trustee Antonio Sanchez introduced the proposal earlier this year after two people were shot, one fatally, at a party held May 12 at an Airbnb on the 2100 block of South 3rd Ave., according to Maywood police.
“It’s important to stay on top of these new trends, because if we don’t then these new trends will topple us,” he said.
The village board could vote on a final ordinance in the coming weeks. VFP
