The Cook County Land Bank Authority, which was established by the county in 2013 to help attract developers to tax-delinquent properties, announced recently the opening of the lottery registration period for its third annual Home Giveaway.
The lottery registration period is from Aug. 10 through Sunday, Sept. 15. After registration closes, the winner of the house will receive the keys and deed to a free, rehabbed single-family house in the Washington Heights neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side in the fall, Land Bank officials explained.
The specific address of the house won’t be revealed until the winner is announced in the fall. Land Bank officials said in a statement that the lucky homeowner “would be responsible for paying only property taxes, insurance and utility bills.”
Those interested in the home giveaway drawing can register online at: www.cookcountylandbank.org/homeownergiveaway.
The lottery was introduced in 2017 in order to raise awareness about the Land Bank’s Homebuyer Direct Program, which helps alleviate obstacles to homeownership by offering fixer-upper houses in Cook County at below-market prices.
“People who own homes are more vested in them and, in turn, more vested in the health of the community,” said Robert Rose, the Land Bank’s executive director. “We’re happy to give away a free home to shine a light on this great program.”
Fifth Third Bank sponsored this year’s home rehab, which was carried out by the twin Downing Brothers of the HGTV pilot show “Double Down.”
“We have rehabbed many homes, but this is one of the most impactful projects we’ve been involved in because it helps make affordable homeownership more accessible,” said Anton Downing.
The brothers announced the start of the registration process for the free home giveaway at the Bud Billiken on Saturday. They were honorary grand marshals of the event.
Last year’s free home was located at 1008 N. Maywood Drive in Maywood. Jenia Hart, 21, won the home. VFP
