A Maywood Police officer may have been injured after an erratic driver crashed head-on into his police SUV on Sunday afternoon, according to witnesses.
The crash happened on the corner of 17th Avenue and North Maywood Drive, sometime after 1 p.m., multiple witnesses said.
According to witnesses, the driver of a blue Nissan sedan was coming out of the parking lot of One Stop Express, 1014 S. 17th Ave., when he backed into a black pickup truck and made a u-turn.
“I saw him coming and I tried to move out of his way, but he just hit the back of me and made a u-turn,” the driver of the pickup truck said, adding that there were two other people in the vehicle at the time. None of them appeared injured.
The driver said that the vehicle then drove around the block and was heading west on North Maywood Drive, when he crashed into the police SUV.
“The police officer came up the street and tried to stop him, and ran right into him,” the driver said.
Witnesses said that they saw the Maywood police officer exit the vehicle and proceed to handcuff the man before the officer had to lay on the ground. Witnesses said the officer appeared to be complaining about his leg.
Witnesses said that a female passenger was also in the blue Sedan. As police officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a small dog in the car, as well.
The conditions of the driver and the passenger are so far unknown. First responders declined to comment on their medical status. All three people involved in the head-on crash were treated at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene said that the driver of the sedan was visibly shaking at some point during the incident, but they didn’t know what may have caused him to drive erratically. VFP
