Melrose Park Cop Taken Into Custody For Maywood Homicide Aug. 27

One man is dead and another wounded after a shooting that happened in Maywood on Tuesday evening, according to Maywood Police. They said that the suspect in custody is a Melrose Park Police officer.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27, officers responded to a call of shots fired at 417 W. Lake St., where they discovered two people with gunshot wounds.

Arthur J. Walton Jr., 33, was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner. The medical examiner listed Walton’s residency as the building where the incident happened.

Matthew Carter, 25, was also taken to Loyola, where he’s currently being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

Maywood Police said that they have a Melrose Park police officer in custody for the shooting. He’s currently being held at the Maywood Police Station, 125 S. 5th Ave.

Maywood Police said that they have no other information available about the shooting, but Maywood detectives are currently investigating the incident.

This is the second homicide, and the second officer-involved incident, to have happened in Maywood in less than a week. Martin Ojeda, 46, was stabbed to death on Aug. 25 on 1000 block of North 8th Ave.

Earlier that day, a Maywood Police officer driving a police SUV was involved in a head-on collision with an erratic driver on the corner of 17th Avenue and North Maywood Drive. The officer reportedly sustained minor injuries while the medical statuses of the driver and passenger in the other vehicle are currently unknown. VFP
