Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, a well-known educational consultant, public speaker and author, was in Maywood on Aug. 17 to tour the West Town Museum of Cultural History, 104 S. 5th Ave.

Kunjufu has written more than 25 books, including a variety of bestsellers such as Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys and State of Emergency: We Must Save African American Males. He has also appeared on BET and the Oprah Winfrey Show, and his work has been featured in magazines like Ebony and Essence.

George Stone II, the executive director of Operation Uplift, the nonprofit that operates the museum, said that Kunjufu toured the museum with his wife.

“It was humbling to have the Kunjufus visit us,” he said. “His impact and contributions to the liberation of Black minds’ in the realms of education, diet, religion and the rearing of Black children is profound.

“I am so grateful to have met him and to have Jeri Stenson, the West Town Museum volunteer curator and Dorothy Hall, our volunteer administrative affairs officer, share their experiences relating to the rich and illustrious history that Proviso Township has offered the world. It is this history that we also try to instill in our third- and fourth-grade youth who tour our museum each year.”

Stone said that Operation Uplift has also invited Kunjufu to deliver the keynote address at the 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Community Awards Black Tie Gala, which will be held Jan. 18, 2020, at the Diplomat West Banquet Hall in Elmhurst.

The nomination period for potential 2020 award recipients opens on Sept. 3 and closes Nov. 3. Forms are available at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood and at Operation Uplift, 104 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood. For more information, call (708) 516-0628. VFP
