During a regular meeting on Sept. 3, the Broadview Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution in honor of Robert “DJ Rob” Earl Gray Jr., a popular DJ in the Proviso Township area who died in July at 43.

Broadview Trustee Judy Miller, who requested the resolution and lives near Gray’s family in Broadview, held back tears during her comments before the board voted to approve the resolution.

“Most people should know DJ Rob through his mom, Mrs. Gray,” Miller said. “She’s one of our crossing guards.”

Gray was born in Chicago on Sept. 12, 1975. He attended Lindop Elementary School in Broadview before going on to Proviso East High School. Gray was a longtime employee of AT&T and Nicor, according to the village’s resolution.

Gray “began working for the Broadview Park District at 14, when he developed his passion for music and began deejaying in Proviso Township,” said Broadview Trustee John Tierney as he read from the resolution.

“He was known for the setup — for having the best sound that came from his huge speakers,” Tierney added. “He was loved by everyone and was looked to as a leader. He loved and laughed, and was an excellent employee who committed himself to serving others.” VFP
