There’s a lot to do this week in Proviso Township. Here is just a small sampling of events available for you and the family: 

See ‘Discover Maywood’ unveiled

On Thursday, Sept. 19, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, community members will unveil the wall graphic, “Discovering Maywood”.  The artwork shares highlights of Maywood’s history in three panels, with a particular view towards the diversity of the town’s cultural and racial heritage.

Discuss ‘Black Against Empire’

On Monday, Sept. 23, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the library will host the first part of a three-part discussion series on the One Book, One Proviso selection Black Against Empire: The History and Politics of the Black Panther Party by Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin Jr.

Compete in Proviso Idol

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m., at Bulger Park, 1601 Hirsch Ave. in Melrose Park, the first of two open auditions for the 2019 Proviso Idol competition will be held. Come early to ensure you have a chance to audition. 2018 first place winners are not eligible to participate in the 2019 competition.

You must show proof of residency in Proviso Township in order to participate in the Proviso Idol Competition.

Join the dialogue on faith and mental illness

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m., at The Living Room, 1917 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview, NAMI Metro Suburban will host a conversation around the intersection of between faith and mental illness. Light breakfast served. RSVP at mentalhealthfaithconversation.eventbrite.com.

Join a ‘Black Against Empire’ book discussion

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Jazz Desires Artistic Center, 1213 S. 17th Ave. in Maywood, Jazz Desires will hold an open house. Jazz Desires wants to nurture creativity and spread our message of hope to the youth. We believe that by cultivating an interest in Jazz, we can have a positive impact on our community. Enrollment available for youth and adults in piano, guitar, percussion, saxophone, drums and bass.

Go fishing

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Stevenson Pond, 3101 Washington Blvd. in Bellwood, the Memorial Park District will host a Community Fishing Derby. Catch a live fish for dinner. Cleaning station available. Prizes for the largest and smallest caught on the hour. Raffle winner must be present to win. Drawing held at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Bait shop. Gut fish. Concession. Bring your rod, reel and bait.
