A brand new park that will be named after a local lawmaker is being built on a long-empty lot in Maywood. The park is currently under construction at 1015 S. 10th Ave., between Madison Street and Maywood Drive.
Lonette Hall, the executive director of the Maywood Park District, said in an interview on Sept 20. that work on the park started last year and is being paid for out of the district’s general fund. Hall said she didn’t have the total cost of the park readily available.
“We started [building the park] last year, so it’s been a work in progress,” Hall said, adding that the district has contracted with local businesses on the park construction. Hall said the park will feature a playground unit with swing sets, as well as picnic tables.
“I was told there was a park there 20 years ago,” Hall said. “There are children in that area and the lot was vacant, so the district thought it was a perfect fit. It will also discourage kids from crossing a busy main intersection.”
Hall said that the new park will be named after state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th).
“Rep. Welch has served as an invaluable resource for our community and has accomplished so much for families in Maywood,” Hall explained in a statement.
“Naming this new park after him was a great way to recognize the service that he has provided for our community,” she added. “We are excited to unveil this new beautiful park that will offer a place for families to gather for years to come. I encourage residents to stop by the ribbon cutting and get a first-hand look at the new park.”
A free community ribbon-cutting will be held for the park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.
“Local parks offer great activities for children in our community, whether it’s through after-school programs or simply just a playground set for children to play at,” Welch said. “This new park will be an asset to our community for years to come. I hope families in the neighborhood are able to make it on Saturday to enjoy some fun family activities.”
This is at least the second instance of the Maywood Park District constructing a new park or refurbishing an existing park. In September 2018, dozens of volunteers pitched in to build a new playground area at Winfield Scott Park, 1800 S. Maywood Drive in Maywood, in less than a day.
The project was the result of a collaboration between the Maywood Park District, the village of Maywood and KaBOOM, a national nonprofit “dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids,” according its website.
